Sandra Pepa Denton On Nicki Minaj
Sandra Pepa Denton On Nicki Minaj – Sandy ‘Pepa’ Denton, formerly of the popular rap group Salt N’ Pepa, recently said that current rap superstar Nicki Minaj’s rap persona is controlled by men within the industry. Salt N’ Pepa, like Nicki Minaj, also faced their fair share of controversy stemming from a large catalogue of racy lyrics. While Minaj’s lyrics have been compared to Lil’ Kim more often than Salt N’ Pepa, there are obviously some similarities between the two rap entities. Pepa apparently agrees with those assertions.
“She reminds me of Lil’ Kim,” Pepa told reporters recently. “Bold and you know … she’s young and a lot of people are like ‘oh what do you feel about her because of the message?’ but to me she hasn’t learned the message yet. Not everyone’s role model material, but we do have a sense of responsibility because kids listen more to us than they would their parents. But [Nicki's] young, so how’s she gonna enlighten?”
The criticism coming from Pepa is surprising because she has faced similar controversy previously in her music career. Pepa also went on to theorize that the male influence in her lyrics is more than likely coming from her record label executives and artists on the popular Young Money label, a record label that was founded by Lil’ Wayne as a subsidiary of Cash Money Records.
“She’s new, she’s excited and what happens when you have a male camp backing you? Yeah, you might be singing those kinds of lyrics,” Pepa told reporters. “That’s what happens when you have a male camp dictating how you should be. I’m not mad at Nicki. I think she’s talented. I love her style. She has a lot of attitude, she has a lot of things she wants to express so I wouldn’t be mad at that. I was there at that age, so I don’t expect her to be like ‘oh let me start being this way.’ This is what she’s feelin’.”
